Sometimes, with planning. Our network has covered sites in the KW area, but very few officers live here, so cover is normally arranged with officers travelling from further south and the control room confirms what is possible before you book.
The KW area takes in Caithness on the northern tip of mainland Scotland and the Orkney islands across the Pentland Firth. Wick and Thurso are the main Caithness towns, with harbours that have become bases for offshore wind and marine work, and the long-running nuclear decommissioning programme at Dounreay remains a significant employer near Thurso. Scrabster harbour links to Stromness by ferry. In Orkney, Kirkwall is the main town and port, with Stromness on the west mainland; the islands support farming, fishing, tourism, cruise visits and a strong renewable and marine energy sector. Ferries also run from Gills Bay and from Aberdeen, and flights operate to Wick and Kirkwall.
We are open about the limits here. Our network has completed some work in the KW area, mostly at weekends, but fewer than five officers are based locally, so most shifts mean an officer travelling up the A9 or crossing to Orkney. That makes planned, multi-day bookings far more practical than one-off or same-day requests. Weather across the Pentland Firth and on northern roads can delay changeovers, and we build that into the rota rather than hope for the best. Every officer who attends holds the right SIA licence, is screened to BS 7858 and uses the client app for GPS clock-in, welfare checks and incident reporting.
On the mainland, Thurso and Wick are the main points of cover, reached via the A9 and A99, which are long drives from Inverness. Orkney cover is centred on Kirkwall and Stromness, with officers crossing by ferry from Scrabster or Gills Bay, or flying in. Our network has covered sites in the area before, but the local pool is very small, so the control room confirms officers, travel and accommodation for each booking and agrees a fallback in case a crossing is cancelled.
