Durham is a compact cathedral and university city, and the university shapes much of what happens there: student housing, teaching buildings, events and a steady programme of construction and refurbishment. The cathedral and castle together form a World Heritage Site, which brings visitors throughout the year. The A1(M) runs down the eastern side of the DH area, with junctions serving Chester-le-Street and Durham, and business parks and trade estates have grown up close to those junctions. Stanley, on higher ground to the north-west, and Hetton, towards Sunderland, are former mining communities with industrial estates, retail parades and new housing developments.
Fewer than five officers in our partner network live in the DH area at the moment, and we have no completed bookings here yet, so we do not pretend to have a local team. Cover is arranged from officers in neighbouring parts of the network, such as Newcastle, Sunderland and Teesside, all within reasonable reach via the A1(M) and A167. The 24/7 control room checks availability before confirming each shift. Officers sent to County Durham sites are SIA-licensed for the role and BS 7858 screened, and each shift shows up in the app with GPS clock-in, welfare check-calls, a live occurrence log and photo incident reports.
Durham city and Chester-le-Street are the most straightforward places to cover, sitting directly on the A1(M) and A167 between Newcastle and Teesside. Stanley is reached via the A693, and Hetton lies to the east towards Sunderland on the A182 and A690. Because officers usually travel in from neighbouring areas, the control room will confirm who can reach your site and when before the booking is accepted. Planned shifts are easier to staff than same-day requests.
