The NE postcode stretches from the Tyne to the Scottish border. Newcastle upon Tyne is the commercial centre, with offices, shopping streets, universities, large hospitals and a busy Quayside, and Gateshead faces it across the river. Along the Tyne towards the coast, Wallsend, Jarrow, South Shields and Tynemouth have a long history in shipbuilding and port work, and land along the river is still used for marine, offshore and engineering businesses. Washington and Cramlington have large industrial estates and manufacturing linked to the automotive supply chain, while the A1 and A19 carry freight through the area.
North of the city, Northumberland is much more rural, with market towns such as Hexham, Morpeth and Alnwick, the port at Blyth and coastal towns including Amble.
