The LA postcode area runs from Lancaster and Morecambe in north Lancashire up into the southern Lake District and across to the Furness peninsula. Lancaster is a university and county town with a historic centre, and Morecambe and Heysham combine a seaside resort with a port and energy installations. Kendal is the main town of South Lakeland, and Windermere, Ambleside and Grange-over-Sands depend heavily on tourism, with hotels, holiday lets and attractions busy for much of the year. Barrow-in-Furness is dominated by shipbuilding and its supply chain, while Ulverston, Dalton and Millom are smaller industrial and market towns. The M6 runs north-south through the area, and the A590 is the main road into Furness.
