Dumfries and Galloway is one of the largest and most rural parts of southern Scotland. Dumfries is the main town and service centre, while the A75 runs west across the region to Stranraer and the ferry port at Cairnryan, which carries freight and passengers to Northern Ireland. In the east, the M74 corridor passes Lockerbie, Moffat and the Annan area on the route between Glasgow and the border. Much of the land is farming and forestry, and the hills have seen large wind farm and grid projects. Coastal towns such as Kirkcudbright, Wigtown and Gatehouse of Fleet depend heavily on visitors, especially in summer.
We want to be clear: fewer than five officers in our partner network live in the DG area, and the network has no completed work here yet. Cover is arranged by sourcing officers from neighbouring areas such as Carlisle, Ayrshire and Lanarkshire, which can mean long journeys, particularly to the west of the region. For that reason the control room will discuss travel, accommodation if needed and realistic start dates before confirming anything. Planned work, such as a fixed construction programme or a scheduled event, is far easier to staff here than same-day requests. Anyone deployed in the region has the appropriate SIA licence and BS 7858 background screening.
The eastern side of the region is the most practical to staff, because Annan, Lockerbie, Lochmaben and Moffat are close to the M74 and within reach of officers based around Carlisle and Lanarkshire. Dumfries is covered on the same basis. Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie are further along the A75, while Newton Stewart, Wigtown and Stranraer involve long drives, so the control room will be realistic about what can be arranged and when before confirming any booking there.
