The LD postcode area covers the heart of rural mid Wales: much of Radnorshire and Breconshire in Powys. It is sparsely populated, with small market and spa towns rather than large urban centres. Llandrindod Wells is an administrative centre, Builth Wells is home to the Royal Welsh Showground at Llanelwedd, which hosts the large agricultural show each summer along with other events, and Brecon is a gateway to the Bannau Brycheiniog national park. Rhayader sits close to the Elan Valley reservoirs, while Knighton and Presteigne are near the English border. Farming, forestry, tourism and outdoor activity dominate the economy, and the A470 and A483 are the main routes through.
We will be clear about how cover works here. Fewer than five officers in our network are based in the LD area and we arrange bookings by bringing officers in from South Wales, Shropshire and Herefordshire. That is workable for planned events, construction phases and vacant buildings that need guarding for a set period, especially where shifts can be grouped together. One-off or same-day requests in remote spots are difficult and may not be possible. Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells, on the A483 and A470, are the most practical places to cover in the LD area, along with Brecon to the south. Talgarth sits between Brecon and Hay, while Rhayader lies north on the A470. Knighton and Presteigne, near the English border, are often easier to reach from Herefordshire and Shropshire. Llanwrtyd Wells is quieter and further west. Because the local pool is very small, the control room plans travel, rest and accommodation for every booking and confirms the officer in advance.
